Water safety while staying at a Charleston beach house
As a follow-up to that last blog about the great parks in our area (click HERE), this weekend there’s a special event about water safety – an important subject for anyone coming to coastal SC vacation rentals, be it a luxury house on Isle of Palms or a Folly Beach house Charleston.
In honor of National Beach Safety Week and Rip Current Awareness Week, lifeguards at the Isle of Palms County Park will be holding beach safety demonstrations. It’ll happen at 2:00 Saturday, June 6th. The park is located straight at the end of the street as you come off the IOP Connector, and it’s an easy drive from our beach rentals Charleston, especially our Isle of Palms vacation rentals.
Water safety representatives will also be on hand during the day at three area beach parks to distribute helpful information. They’ll be at the IOP County Park (near our Isle of Palms luxury rentals), Folly Beach County Park (near Folly Beach house rentals Charleston SC) and Kiawah Beachwalker Park.

This weekend it’s time again for the annual festival that celebrates an iconic symbol of the Lowcountry and its culture -sweetgrass baskets.
The tradition of weaving baskets out of native grasses has roots deep in the history of the area and the Gullah-Geechee heritage of the Sea Islands. Gullah-Geechee is the rich culture of the descendants of enslaved Africans in the Lowcountry, especially the Sea Islands of the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida. It’s characterized by a distinctive language (an English-based creole with much African influence), rice-based cuisine, music and traditions such as the weaving of baskets, many of which were used in the production and winnowing of rice.
If you’re coming to stay in one of our rental homes South Carolina, a sweetgrass basket is the classic souvenir to bring back from your stay. Folks who came to a Charleston beach house decades ago and purchased one still cherish these baskets and pass them down as heirlooms.
On Saturday, June 6th, the Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival will take over Waterfront Park from noon till 7:00 p.m. It’s a family-friendly event with lots of Lowcountry food, arts and craft vendors, gospel music, live entertainment like dance and drumming, and of course basket weaving.
