In a Charleston beach house? Celebrate BBQ & sweet tea
If you’re in a Charleston beach house this weekend, a couple fun festivals are taking place. First up, it’s the Smoke on the Harbor Barbecue Throwdown, now in its fifth year.
It’s a fully sanctioned national event, under the auspices of the KCBS (Kansas City Barbecue Society). These pit masters are serious, hard-core men and women who have their eyes on the BBQ prize… and you get to be the lucky beneficiary.
The competition cranks up tonight with the chicken wing competition, going on from 5:00-9:00 p.m. at the Lookout Pavilion at the Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina – 20 Patriot’s Point Road in Mount Pleasant. It’s a convenient drive from all our rental homes South Carolina. From our Isle of Palms vacation rentals, head over Sullivan’s to Coleman Boulevard in Mount Pleasant, and turn left right before the base of the Ravenel Bridge. For those staying in Folly Beach house rentals Charleston SC, head over to the peninsula, cross the Ravenel Bridge, exit to the right onto Coleman and take your first right off the bridge. Just follow the smoke!
Then tomorrow (Saturday, November 12th), from noon till 5:00 p.m., it’s the BBQ competition. Get set for world-class pork, ribs, brisket and chicken.
There’ll be all sorts of samples as well as other food and drink available for purchase. There will also be live music, a huge vendor village, a bartender mixology competition (the Iron Bartender George Dickel Mixology Competition), kids’ zone, and last but not least a food drive benefitting the fine folks at East Cooper Meals on Wheels.
Tickets are $10 general admission, although if you bring five non-perishable food items to be donated, you’ll get $5 off at the gate. Sampling tickets are $1. Kids 12 and under are admitted free. These folks didn’t come to play – so it’s a great way to feed AND entertain all the folks in your Charleston beach house, whether you’re in a luxury house at Isle of Palms or a Folly Beach house Charleston.
Here’s the official website, which includes the final points results from previous years (gotta love some of the creative BBQ team names — Pig on Fire, Blowin’ Smoke, 99 Problems But a Brisket Ain’t One, Bunch of Dumbies, Cackalacky Que, Tom Tom Bob A Que)… as well as a full schedule of events: http://www.smokeontheharbor.com/
Last year’s winners were:
Grand Champion: SMOKE CENTRAL BBQ
Reserve Champion: JB’S SMOKEHOUSE
Peoples Choice Wings: SWIG & SWINE
Peoples Choice Pork: SWIG & SWINE

Well, this weekend they’re cranking up the party again with the Sweet Tea Festival, going on now through Sunday.
