Beach rentals Charleston: Look to the sky
If you’re in one of our beach rentals Charleston this weekend, a cool celestial event is happening tonight. Also this weekend is a good time to start the Valentine’s Day celebrating, or at least planning for the big day of love, which falls on a Tuesday.
The Lowcountry has no shortage of interesting natural phenomena to see, as I covered in this BLOG.
Get set for a triple treat in the sky near our beach rentals Charleston…
Well, tonight, get set for a pretty rare triple celestial occurrence – a full moon (called a “snow moon”), a partial lunar eclipse, and a comet combo.
A penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the earth is positioned between the sun and the full moon, and it blocks part of the sun’s rays from hitting the moon, thereby causing the surface to appear darker than normal.
You don’t need any special glasses or protection as in a solar eclipse. You may want to use binoculars or a telescope for an even better view – or just step out onto the deck of your Charleston beach house.
The exact time of the eclipse will be 7:43 p.m. EDT, here in the Lowcountry. If you’re here in one of our rental homes South Carolina, you’re in luck. The skies look to be clear, so it should be quite visible at moonrise.
Then, a comet will pass by our beach rentals Charleston…
Then, early tomorrow morning, the third part kicks in. Get set for Comet 45P to make its closest pass by the earth – just 7.4 million miles away. It should be most visible at 3:00 a.m. Saturday morning, in the constellation Hercules. Just look east from your luxury house on Isle of Palms. It’ll look like a bright blue-green head with a tail. Comet 45P won’t be this close again till the year 2022.

Another favorite attraction among folks who stay in our luxury beach house rentals SC – Magnolia Plantation – is hosting a very appealing Valentine’s event this weekend.
It’s called the VALENTINE CHOCOLATE WALK, and it’s free with regular garden admission.
You’re invited to stroll with your sweetheart through the oldest gardens in America, enjoying one of the top collections of camellias in the world (over 20,000), as I covered in this recent BLOG. Along the way, you’ll be serenaded by string musicians, and you’re invited to enjoy ten different tasting stations with decadent chocolate creations.
The famous camellias of Magnolia bloom from the middle of November to April. November and December see the camellia sasanqua in bloom, with the japonicas hitting their stride from mid-January to mid-March.
Magnolia has this to say about their gardens: “Unlike most of America’s gardens, which are formal and seek to control nature, Magnolia cooperates with nature to create a tranquil landscape like Eden where humanity and nature are in harmony.”
It’s going on both Saturday (Feb. 11th) and Sunday (February 12th) from 11:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. If you’d like to enjoy a romantic chocolate walk just with your sweetie, separate interactive activities are available for the kids. (By the way, children 5 and under are free.)
