Another Polar Bear Plunge, plus Pet Perks
If the weather’s cold and there’s water around, chances are someone’s going to be jumping into it for charity.
If you’ve been in the Lowcountry on New Year’s Day, you may have witnessed the annual Polar Bear Plunge on Sullivan’s Island, just over the Breach Inlet Bridge from our Isle of Palms luxury rentals.
Thousands of folks run into the Atlantic, many wearing kooky costumes. (I’ll never forget the two skinny, pale pink shivering guys clothed only in turtle shells duct-taped front and back over certain crucial parts, running back to Dunleavy’s after the plunge).
Good news is, they raise a ton of money for the Special Olympics and have been doing so for years. Sponsored by the Law Enforcement Torch Run, such events take place all over the country, where they encourage folks to run or jump into nearby bodies of water… even northern inland lakes. Yowza! The water around here is much kinder and gentler.
If you’re here right now in a one of our rental homes South Carolina, namely a Charleston beach house on the IOP, there’s another plunge happening this weekend, right on the island. It’s the Special Olympics Polar Plunge at Front Beach. Party central is The Windjammer, 1008 Ocean Boulevard.
The festivities start at 10:30 a.m. Saturday (tomorrow, Feb. 28th) morning, with live registration. The plunge itself occurs at 1:00 p.m. There’s a minimum donation of $50 to join in, which also gets you an official t-shirt, tickets for libations and food and chances at door prizes. Spectators are also welcome, and there will be plenty of food and games for all.

It’s been well documented that there are many advantages to owning a pet – emotional, physiological, even spiritual. They boost your mood, provide constant companionship and love, encourage healthy exercise (especially if your friend is of the canine variety), lower blood pressure, never are verbally abusive, and they even foster interactions among us humans (just try walking a dog in Charleston without engaging in a pleasant conversation with someone new).
And if you adopt a shelter pet, add this to that list: the deep, true joy of saving a life.
As I blogged about recently, the local shelter, the Charleston Animal Society, is running a “Pawdi Gras” special where you can adopt any adult dog for only $17 through the month of February. Included is spay/neuter, microchip, vaccinations, heartworm test and flea preventatives, so it’s a really good deal.
There’s another really cool “pet perk” going on now through the end of March. If you adopt a dog from any of the Charleston area pet shelters or adoption programs, you will receive a free annual family membership to Magnolia Plantation and Gardens (a $100 value!)
Magnolia Plantation is one of the most beloved and photographed of the Lowcountry plantations. Their gardens – America’s oldest, having been founded 338 years ago – are not only gorgeous but also pet friendly. Leashed dogs are welcome 365 days of the year. Magnolia’s been named one of the most dog-friendly destinations in the United States.
Magnolia Plantation is located at 3550 Ashley River Road in Charleston – a pleasant drive from all our luxury beach house rentals SC, either Isle of Palms vacation rentals or a Folly Beach house Charleston.
You can adopt from any of these groups:
- the Charleston Animal Society, North Charleston;
- the Francis R. Willis Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Summerville;
- Pet Helpers, James Island (not far from Folly Beach rentals Charleston);
- Sinbad-Sadie Second Chance Rescue.
They’ll have a coupon on hand at any of these places when you adopt. Just take it to the front office at Magnolia Plantation to redeem and receive your annual family pass. Here’s more: http://www.magnoliaplantation.com/whatsnew.html
